Arellano and Stark analyse real case histories comparing 2D and 3D factors of safety. They show that translational failures through weak layers can differ dramatically (up to 30%) between 2D and 3D analyses. They evaluate capabilities and limitations of commercial 3D software and propose improvements for realistic shear transfer along flanks.
