Bertoldi’s thesis investigates progressive failure mechanisms in soil slopes using numerical simulation. It examines strain-softening behaviour, reduction of shear strength upon deformation and how localised zones of weakness propagate to form large-scale failures. The work models staged reductions in shear strength and pore pressure to replicate observed failures.
