Stability Assessment of a Circular Earth Dam

Chugh evaluates the behaviour of circular (ring) earth dams using full 3D continuum modelling (FLAC/FLAC3D). The study examines tensile stress development, hoop tension effects, deformation patterns, pore-pressure influence, and differences between 2D and 3D factors of safety. Comparisons with analytical thick-wall cylinder theory support the modelling approach. The paper highlights how curved geometry influences stability, sometimes increasing or decreasing safety margins depending on stress redistribution, and recommends when 3D modelling is necessary for dam safety assessment.
