Eigenvalue Problem from the Stability Analysis of Slopes

Zheng recasts slope stability in an eigenvalue framework using finite‑element formulations. The governing equations lead to an eigenvalue problem where the critical state corresponds to the smallest eigenvalue of the elastoplastic stiffness matrix. The paper discusses numerical properties of the formulation, gives example slopes, and shows how the approach can be used to identify failure modes and safety factors within FEM analyses.
