The Mohr–Coulomb Criterion for Intact Rock Strength and Friction – A Re-Evaluation and Consideration of Failure Under Polyaxial Stresses

Hackston and Rutter experimentally re-evaluate intact-rock failure behaviour under both axisymmetric extension and compression. They show that conventional Mohr–Coulomb assumptions underestimate the role of the intermediate stress and that friction is stress-state dependent. The study refines understanding of rock friction and failure orientation.
