Evaluation of Simplified Seismic Slope Stability Methods in the 2016 Kumamoto Earthquake

Yoshida evaluates several simplified seismic slope-stability methods (pseudostatic, Newmark, and simplified dynamic approaches) using documented slope performance from the 2016 Kumamoto Earthquake. Predicted displacements and safety factors are compared with observed slope behaviour, showing where simplified methods under- or over-estimate deformation. The paper provides guidance on choosing seismic coefficients and understanding method limitations in complex geology.
