Softening and Instability of Natural Slopes in Highly Fissured Plastic Clays

Picarelli and co-authors document the behaviour of natural slopes in highly fissured plastic clays that exhibit pronounced strain-softening. Through field observations, laboratory testing and back-analyses, they show how progressive failure develops along pre-existing fissures and weak layers. The paper discusses appropriate strength parameters for analysis and highlights the importance of considering softening and progressive failure mechanisms in design.
