A Method of Analysis of the Stability of Embankments Assuming Parallel Inter-slice Forces

Spencer proposes a slice method that assumes all interslice resultant forces are parallel and satisfies both force and moment equilibrium. The method can be applied to circular and some non-circular failure surfaces and produces a single, statically admissible factor of safety. Comparisons with Bishop’s and other methods show that Spencer’s solution is generally more rigorous while still practical.
