Baker and Leshchinsky analyse the stability of conical heaps formed by granular or weakly cohesive material. They derive analytical expressions relating heap geometry, friction angle and shear strength to potential failure surfaces. The paper demonstrates that three-dimensional heap geometry produces different stability conditions compared with 2D slopes and provides guidance for stockpile and heap design.
