The Stability of Slopes with Negative Pore-Water Pressures

Fredlund discusses unsaturated soil behaviour and negative pore-water pressures (matric suction) in slope stability. He extends effective-stress and shear-strength formulations to handle suction and demonstrates how suction contributes to apparent cohesion. The paper shows how changes in suction from wetting or infiltration can rapidly reduce stability.
