Aydin analyses the behaviour and stability of saprolitic slopes derived from deeply weathered rock. The paper reviews characteristic soil properties, structure and hydrologic response of saprolites and uses limit-equilibrium analyses to explore triggering mechanisms for failures. Case histories show how intense rainfall, pore-pressure rise and anisotropic shear strength combine to produce large movements in these materials.
