Bishop presents a refined circular-slip method for slope stability that became known as the Bishop simplified method. The method divides the soil mass above a circular slip surface into slices, enforces force and moment equilibrium in an approximate way and incorporates pore water pressures through effective stress. The paper demonstrates how the method can be used for embankments and earth dams and compares results with earlier simpler approaches.
