Chen presents one of the early systematic treatments of three-dimensional slope stability. He extends two-dimensional slice methods to 3D by discretising the sliding mass into columns or blocks, and develops programs such as LEMIX and BLOCK 3. Examples show how 3D effects, particularly for limited-width failures and cohesive soils, can significantly change calculated factors of safety compared with 2D analyses.
