Wedge Failure – Rock Slope Engineering (Chapter 7)

This chapter provides a full analytical and graphical framework for wedge stability in rock slopes. It defines wedge geometry, water-pressure effects, cohesive and frictional resistance on intersecting planes, and formulates dimensionless stability parameters X, Y, A and B (eqs. 7.10–7.13). Detailed stereonet methods are presented for extracting dip/dip direction of planes and line of intersection. Worked examples (pp. 159–161) demonstrate calculation of factors of safety using combined friction, cohesion and water-pressure terms, while later sections (p. 175) illustrate comprehensive stability assessments including tension cracks, bolt forces and seismic coefficients.
