Belmont Quarry: 3D Back Analysis of a Shallow Slope Failure

UAV imagery and point cloud modelling were used to build a 3D quarry model and perform slope stability back analysis in TSLOPE.

Project: Belmont Quarry bench failure

Belmont Quarry point cloud model
Raw point cloud used to generate 3D slope geometry for analysis in TSLOPE.

Overview

A UAV survey captured detailed imagery of localised bench failures at Belmont Quarry. The data was processed into a high-resolution point cloud and converted into a 3D model. These surfaces were imported into TSLOPE to perform back analysis and assess slope stability.

Why this matters

For shallow quarry failures, geometry drives the result. This case demonstrates how UAV-derived models improve failure surface definition and provide more reliable 3D slope stability interpretation compared to simplified 2D sections.
